Laundry Detergents
Laundry detergent is the household product you use most often, so it is worth choosing by the numbers: what one wash costs, the temperature it works from and what is left out of the formula. In this category you will find Ecozyme enzyme liquid laundry detergent and the set with fabric softener. How Ecozyme detergent differs from a conventional one
- Works at low temperatures. Sweat, food and grease stains come out on 30–40 °C cycles, so you spend less on electricity and fabrics wear less.

- Free from phosphates, optical brighteners and dyes. Coloured clothes do not go grey, whites do not yellow, and black clothes show no white streaks.

- Suitable for most fabrics: cotton, synthetics, blends and sportswear. Not suitable for wool or silk.

Detergent without phosphates or optical brighteners: what to look for
A green label or a "natural" claim on the pack guarantees nothing, so look at the ingredients and the numbers. What such labels mean is covered in a separate article, and a longer guide on how to choose a laundry detergent is on the blog.
- Temperature. Enzymes work from 30 °C, so a 30 °C cycle usually does the job of a 60 °C one. Heating the water accounts for most of the electricity a wash uses.
- Concentrate and an accurate dose. Up to 33 washes from 1 L. The right dose means less residue in the fabric and a lower price per wash.
- Free from phosphates, optical brighteners and dyes. These ingredients do not make laundry cleaner; they only stay in the fabric or the water.

Detergent for black clothes
Black clothes fade from friction, water that is too hot and optical brighteners, and white streaks on them are usually residue from undissolved or excess detergent. Ecozyme liquid detergent has no optical brighteners and dissolves well in cool water, so it suits dark clothes too.
- Wash at 30 °C with the clothes turned inside out.
- For lightly soiled clothes use 40 ml (30 ml in soft water): the excess is what leaves white streaks.
- Do not overload the drum and choose a gentler spin.
- Dry in the shade, out of direct sunlight.

Detergent for sportswear
Sweat odour in sportswear comes from proteins and fats absorbed into synthetic fibres. Protease and lipase break them down on a 30–40 °C cycle; hot water is unnecessary and damages elastane. Do not use softener on sportswear: it clogs moisture-wicking fibres. More: how to wash sportswear.
How much detergent to use
Most people use too much. Lightly soiled laundry needs 40 ml, moderately soiled 50 ml, heavily soiled 60 ml, and in soft water 10 ml less. The exact dose depends on water hardness and soiling, see the detergent dosing guide. The product page has a dosing calculator.
Frequently asked questions about laundry detergents
Is an enzyme detergent suitable for coloured and black clothes?

Do I need a softener?
Not necessarily, but in hard water a softener helps keep towels and bedding soft. The set with softener costs €27 instead of €29.80 when bought separately.
Does the detergent remove sweat odour?
