Hair Growth: What Really Boosts It and What Is a Myth
"Grow your hair 5 cm a month!" — a popular advertising claim on social media. "This one ingredient will restore your hair!" — TikTok slogans. The reality is different and less spectacular. In this article — an honest, science-based look at hair growth: what really works, what can't be done, and what realistic expectations are. This article is for information only and does not replace a consultation with a doctor.
How fast hair really grows
Let's start with an unchangeable fact: hair grows on average 1-1,5 cm a month, or 12-18 cm a year. This rate is:
- Genetically determined
- Slightly variable between people (0,8-1,7 cm/month is the normal range)
- Impossible to speed up dramatically with any product
- Slightly slower with age
Any promises of "5 cm a month" are either misleading or simply untrue.
The hair growth cycle
Hair doesn't grow continuously. It goes through three phases:
1. Anagen (growth phase)
- 2-7 years (genetically determined)
- 85-90% of your hair is in this phase at any given time
- The hair grows actively
- The length of anagen determines your maximum hair length
2. Catagen (transition phase)
- 2-3 weeks
- 1-2% of hair
- The hair detaches from its blood supply
3. Telogen (resting phase)
- 3 months
- 10-15% of hair
- The hair is "waiting" to fall out
- At the end it falls out and the cycle starts again
Each hair follicle has its own individual cycle. Over a lifetime, a single follicle "grows" 10-30 hairs.
Maximum hair length — why you can't change it
Your maximum hair length = growth rate × length of the anagen phase.
Example:
- Growth of 1,2 cm/month × 4 years of anagen = 57 cm maximum
- Growth of 1,2 cm/month × 7 years of anagen = 100 cm maximum
That's why some women can grow their hair down to their waist, while others can never get past their shoulders. It's genetics, not a lack of care.
What REALLY can speed up / support growth
1. A balanced diet
Hair is made of the protein keratin. Without the right building blocks, growth slows down. The most important:
- Protein — 1,2-1,5 g/kg of body weight per day. Meat, fish, eggs, pulses.
- Iron — especially for women. Deficiency is one of the most common causes of hair loss.
- Vitamin D — in Lithuania, almost everyone is deficient in winter.
- Zinc — supports follicle function.
- Vitamin B12 — especially for vegans and vegetarians.
- Omega-3 — for scalp health.
For an individual woman, a balanced diet can add +0,2-0,3 cm/month to growth rate. A small effect, but a real one.
2. Stress management
Chronic stress pushes hair into the telogen (shedding) phase sooner.
Reducing stress won't make hair grow faster, but it protects against unnecessary hair loss.
3. Enough sleep
Growth hormone is produced during sleep. 7-9 hours of good-quality sleep supports hair growth.
4. Scalp health
Healthy scalp = healthy follicles = healthy growth. Read more in our scalp health guide.
Scalp massage is a simple thing you can do every day. Studies suggest it may improve blood circulation around the follicles.
5. Minoxidil (medical)
The only FDA-approved topical product with a scientifically proven effect on hair growth:
- 2% — for women
- 5% — for men (and in some places for women too)
- A doctor's consultation is required
- First results — after 3-6 months
- Must be used continuously (if you stop, the effect disappears)
6. Protection from damage
It's a paradox, but an important one: hair can't get longer if the ends keep breaking. What you can do:
- Use heat styling tools less
- A silk pillowcase
- A wide-tooth comb for wet hair
- Regular oil on the ends
- Less harsh colouring / bleaching
Our Grossty Batana oil protects the ends — it reduces breakage, so over time your hair looks longer.
7. Regular trims (a paradox)
Trimming doesn't make hair grow faster (a scientific fact). But it:
- Removes split ends
- Stops breakage (it doesn't travel further up the hair)
- Makes hair look "fuller"
- Ultimately — you lose 1-2 cm with a trim, but gain 5+ cm without breakage over a few months
Ideally — a light "dusting" trim (0,5-1 cm) every 8-12 wks.
Hair growth myths
Myth 1: "Trimming makes hair grow faster"
Trimming removes damaged ends but doesn't change the growth rate. Hair grows from the follicles, not from the ends.
Myth 2: "100 brush strokes a day make hair grow"
An old trick. In reality, brushing too hard damages hair. Gently brushing 2-3 times a day is enough.
Myth 3: "Cold water makes hair grow faster"
Cold water helps colour (it closes the cuticle), but it doesn't change the growth rate.
Myth 4: "Biotin is magic for hair"
Biotin is important, but deficiency is rare in Lithuania. A good diet provides enough. High doses of biotin can skew lab test results rather than increase growth.
Myth 5: "Castor oil grows hair in a week"
Castor oil is good for nourishment and is traditionally used for growth. But "in a week" — not true. Real effects take several months of regular use.
Myth 6: "Hair grows faster in summer"
There's a grain of truth in this myth — more sunlight in summer = more vitamin D = better support for growth. But the difference is small (~10-15%), not dramatic.
Myth 7: "A certain shampoo makes hair grow"
Shampoo stays on the hair for ~30-60 sec. In that time it doesn't reach the follicle. Shampoos can support scalp health, but they don't directly affect growth.
Food supplements — which ones really help
An honest look at popular supplements:
Biotin (B7)
Helps only those who are deficient (which is rare). Too much does nothing for hair but can skew blood test results.
Iron supplements
Help women with a deficiency (a common issue due to menstruation). Get a blood test first.
Hair multivitamins
A good foundation if your diet is incomplete. But they never replace a balanced diet.
Collagen supplements
Some studies suggest a possible effect, but the evidence is still growing.
Saw palmetto
Traditionally used for male hair loss. There is some research, but the minoxidil + finasteride combination works considerably better.
Adaptogens (ashwagandha, rhodiola)
Help indirectly — by reducing stress.
What really works over 6 months
Typical 6-month results with good care:
| Measure | No care | With care |
|---|---|---|
| Growth rate | 1,0-1,2 cm/month | 1,2-1,4 cm/month |
| Breakage | 2-3 cm/6 months lost to damage | 0,5-1 cm/6 months |
| Actual length gained over 6 months | 3-5 cm | 6-8 cm |
The difference — around 2x more actual length in half a year. These are realistic results, not miraculous ones.
When to see a doctor
Seek advice if:
- Your hair suddenly started thinning
- Bald patches appear in specific areas
- Hair loss keeps getting worse after 2-3 months
- Hair loss comes with skin changes
- There's a family history of hair loss (genetic alopecia)
Read more in our article on the causes of hair loss.
A practical 6-month hair growth plan
Weeks 1-2
- Start regular scalp massage (3x a week) — 5 minutes
- Cut heat styling down to 2x a week
- Start using batana oil 2x a week
Month 1
- Review your diet — enough protein, iron and vitamins
- Consider a vitamin D supplement (in winter — almost everyone)
- A silk pillowcase
- A wide-tooth comb for wet hair
Month 3
- Your hair should start showing the first "results"
- A light trim — remove damaged ends
- Keep using oil regularly
Month 6
- Real results — you start seeing 6-8 cm of added length
- A consistent routine, not an intensive "push"
Frequently asked questions
Are there any products that genuinely make hair grow faster?
Clinically proven — minoxidil (medical). Everything else supports healthy growth but doesn't change your genetic growth rate.
Does batana oil really help hair growth?
Not directly — it doesn't make hair grow faster. But it reduces breakage at the ends, so over time your hair looks longer. Combined with scalp massage — the traditional approach of the Miskito people.
How long will it take to grow my hair down my back?
From shoulder length to mid-back (usually +25-30 cm) — 2-3 years with good care. Without care — you may never get there if your hair breaks every day.
My hair started thinning after an illness / stress. How long until it grows back?
Telogen effluvium (temporary shedding after stress) usually recovers within 6-12 months of the underlying cause being removed. Read more in our article on hair loss.
Do minerals help in a scalp massage?
The benefit lies not in the minerals but in the massage itself — better circulation and less stress. Oil helps as a "lubricant".
Summary
Hair growth is a biological process whose speed you can't change dramatically. But you can optimise what is possible: a balanced diet, stress management, good-quality sleep, a healthy scalp and protection from damage. Realistic expectations: 6-8 cm over 6 months instead of 3-5 cm without care. Myths (trimming makes hair grow, cold water works, shampoo grows hair) should be dismissed — stick to what's rational. Grossty Batana oil is part of a healthy routine — protecting the ends and nourishing the scalp.
