Washing Baby Clothes: The Complete Guide for Parents

Washing baby clothes with a gentle enzyme laundry detergent — Ecozyme

Your newborn's first outfit, the first wardrobe, the first nappy "accident" dealt with — parenthood begins not only with joy, but with a pile of practical questions. One of the most common: how do you wash baby clothes properly? The answer matters more than you might think — a baby's skin is 4 times thinner than an adult's, and chemical residues reach the bloodstream more quickly. In this article: a complete guide with honest advice (including an answer you may not be expecting).

Why baby clothes need extra care

Adult skin has a fully developed stratum corneum — a protective layer that filters out most substances. Babies don't have this protection yet. Specifically:

  • Skin 4 times thinner than an adult's
  • An immune system that is still developing — it is harder for it to recognise and neutralise allergens
  • Chemicals are absorbed into the bloodstream more easily and more quickly
  • Mouth contact — babies often suck on their sleeves, toys and dummies
  • Lower body weight — the same amount of a chemical means a higher concentration relative to body size

All of this means that laundry detergent residue in the fibres matters far more for a baby than for an adult.

First clothes — before the first wear

New clothes should ALWAYS be washed before your baby wears them. The reasons:

  • Chemicals used in fabric manufacturing (formaldehyde, starch, fragrances)
  • Dust and microorganisms from storage
  • Finishing residues that give "new" clothes their distinctive smell
  • A real test wash — you'll see whether the fabric stretches or loses colour

First wash — with a gentle enzyme laundry detergent, at 30–40 °C, with an extra rinse.

Choosing a laundry detergent

What to look for when choosing a laundry detergent for baby clothes:

Must avoid

  • Synthetic dyes — they serve no functional purpose and add to the chemical load
  • Optical brighteners — they create an illusion of "whiteness" and remain in the fibres
  • NPEs / APEs (nonylphenol ethoxylates) — older forms of surfactants
  • Strong synthetic fragrances — fragrance-free or minimal fragrance is ideal
  • Chlorine bleach — no benefit for everyday washing, and plenty of risk

Better to choose

  • An enzyme formula — gentler, leaving fewer chemical residues on the fibres
  • No dyes
  • Fragrance-free or with a minimal amount of declared allergens
  • Biodegradable
  • A transparent formula in line with EU regulations

Is Ecozyme suitable for babies? An honest answer

We'll be upfront, even though it isn't convenient for our marketing: Ecozyme enzyme laundry detergent is suitable for most babies, BUT it isn't the optimal choice if you're looking for the ideal "baby laundry detergent".

Benefits for babies:

  • Enzyme formula (gentler than conventional laundry detergents)
  • No dyes
  • No optical brighteners
  • Biodegradable
  • Made in Lithuania, with a transparent formula

Limitations:

  • Contains fragrance ingredients, including Coumarin (one of the 26 EU-declared allergens)
  • It is NOT a fragrance-free laundry detergent
  • The ideal "baby" laundry detergent would be completely fragrance-free

Our practical recommendation: Ecozyme enzyme laundry detergent is suitable if:

  • No one in the family has a known fragrance allergy
  • Your baby is healthy, with no atopic dermatitis or marked sensitivity
  • You use a reduced dose (20–25 ml) and an extra rinse

If your baby has atopic dermatitis or there is a family history of allergies — choose a specialist fragrance-free laundry detergent (e.g. Ecover Zero, Sodasan baby or similar). For more on the difference between "hypoallergenic" and "fragrance-free", see our article on laundry detergent for sensitive skin.

IMPORTANT note about fabric softener

Most fabric softener labels clearly state: do not use on children's textiles. This also applies to Ecozyme fabric softener — according to the label, it is not recommended for baby clothes. The reasons:

  • Cationic surfactants — these can irritate a baby's sensitive skin
  • Fragrances — an additional source of allergens
  • It clogs the fibres and stops them "breathing"

If you want softer clothes, here are some alternatives:

  • Laundry vinegar — 50 ml of white vinegar in the softener compartment
  • Wool dryer balls in the tumble dryer (the adult versions)
  • A thorough hydrogen peroxide rinse (or baking soda)
  • Simply drying in the sun — a natural softener

Practical washing tips

1. Wash separately from adult clothes

Baby clothes should be washed separately. Even if you use the same gentle laundry detergent, the fibres of adult clothes may carry residue from previous (less gentle) detergents.

2. Use a smaller dose of laundry detergent

For baby laundry, 20-25 ml of enzyme laundry detergent is enough (instead of the standard 30-40 ml). Less detergent = less residue.

3. An extra rinse — ESSENTIAL

All modern washing machines have an "extra rinse" option. For baby clothes — always switch it on.

4. The right temperature

  • Everyday washing: 30–40 °C
  • After a nappy "accident" or illness: 60 °C
  • Cloth nappies: 60 °C as standard, 90 °C once a month to disinfect

5. No fabric softener

As covered above — fabric softener is not suitable for baby textiles.

Nappies and poo stains — how to clean them

Poo stains are protein-based — they are removed by the proteases in an enzyme laundry detergent:

  1. First, remove as much solid matter as possible (with wipes, into the toilet)
  2. Rinse the garment under cold (NOT hot) running water
  3. Apply enzyme laundry detergent directly to the stain
  4. Leave to pre-treat for 30 minutes
  5. Wash at 60 °C (to kill bacteria), with an extra rinse
  6. Check the result before drying

Cloth nappies — the specifics

If you use cloth nappies:

  • A separate washing routine — never mix them with other clothes
  • Pre-rinse (before the main wash) in cold water
  • Main wash at 60 °C with a full dose of enzyme laundry detergent
  • An extra rinse — a must
  • Hydrogen peroxide as an alternative to fabric softener (50 ml of 3% peroxide in the softener compartment)
  • Drying in the sun — naturally disinfects and whitens
  • Avoid fabric softener (it reduces absorbency)

Drying

  • Air-drying in a well-ventilated room — best. Sun + fresh air = natural disinfection.
  • The sun as a natural bleach — UV destroys bacteria and naturally whitens light-coloured clothes. Be careful with coloured items (they may fade).
  • Tumble dryer — fine, but WITHOUT dryer sheets (they add fragrance). Wool dryer balls are a better alternative.
  • Ironing — extra disinfection (heat kills bacteria). Suitable for cotton textiles.

Frequently asked questions

Until what age should children's clothes be washed separately?

Until around 2-3 years old — separately, with a gentle laundry detergent. After that, if your child doesn't have sensitive skin, you can wash their clothes with the rest of the family's laundry, but still avoid harsh detergents.

Do I really need a "special" baby laundry detergent?

Specialist "baby" laundry detergents often carry a premium price for the same ingredients as a good all-purpose enzyme laundry detergent without dyes or fragrances. What matters most is the formula, not the words on the pack.

My baby has atopic dermatitis. Which laundry detergent is best?

A fragrance-free enzyme laundry detergent, dermatologically approved. Ask a paediatric dermatologist for a specific recommendation. Ecozyme is not recommended in this case because it contains fragrances.

How can I tell if laundry detergent residue is irritating my baby's skin?

Signs: rashes where the skin touches clothing (neck, knees, elbows, armpits), itching, redness after wearing. The first test — stop using fabric softener (if you were) and add an extra rinse. If that doesn't help — switch laundry detergent.

Is laundry vinegar safe for baby clothes?

Yes, white vinegar (not balsamic) is safe. No smell remains after rinsing. It reduces limescale residue in the fibres and gently softens them.

Summary

Washing baby clothes calls for a mindful approach, but it isn't rocket science. The key rules: a gentle enzyme laundry detergent without dyes or optical brighteners, a smaller dose, an extra rinse, NO fabric softener, a low or moderate temperature (30–60 °C depending on the situation), and a separate routine from adult clothes. The ideal laundry detergent for babies is a fragrance-free enzyme formula. Ecozyme is a good, but not ideal, choice — suitable for families with no known fragrance allergies and for healthy babies.
