How to dose laundry detergent correctly (and why most people get it wrong)
Here's something the adverts will never tell you: most people use 1,5-2 times more laundry detergent than they need. It's not just a waste of money — it leads to poorer washing results, damaged clothes and potential skin irritation. Why so many people get the dose wrong
There are three reasons why most people overdose:
1. The "more = cleaner" myth
It seems logical: if your clothes are very dirty, add more detergent. But laundry chemistry works differently. Up to a certain point — yes, more detergent = better results. Beyond that point — more detergent = worse results, because the fibres don't rinse out fully and the residue coats the fabric in a "softening" layer that actually just clogs it.
2. Marketing
Detergent manufacturers have an interest in you using more, not less — so that you buy more. Labels often show "recommended" doses that are more generous than necessary.
3. Standard measuring caps
Most detergent caps hold 60-100 ml. People instinctively pour a "full" or "half" cap — when in reality a third of a cap is often enough.

Residue in the fibres
Detergent that doesn't rinse out stays in the fibres. This residue:

3 factors that determine the right dose
The right dose isn't a fixed number — it depends on three things:
1. Load size (kg)
A standard washing machine holds 5-7 kg of dry laundry. Your loads are often smaller (3-5 kg). The dose should be proportionate: not a full dose if the drum isn't full.
2. Soiling level
- Light: everyday T-shirts, underwear, trousers without stains
- Medium: bedding, sportswear, children's clothes with minor stains

3. Water hardness

- Very hard (22+ °dH) — consider a water softening system
